چکیده

Over the past decade micro and nanofluidics emerged as vital tools in the ongoing drive towards the development of nano-scale analysis and manufacturing systems. Accurate numerical modelling of the phenomena involved at these scales is essential in order to speed up the industrial design process for nanotechnology. However a parameter often ignored in hybrid simulations is the uncertainty level introduced in the numerical modelling of phenomena taking place at micro and nanoscales. The main interest of the present study is the propagation of the inherent atomistic fluctuations to the continuum solver in the case of multiscale modelling and hybrid solvers.

Hybrid Atomistic–Continuum Formulationsand the Moving Contact-Line Problem

We present a hybrid atomistic–continuum computational framework for the treatment of dense fluid problems with emphasis on the coupling of molecular dynamics with continuum (finite element/spectral) methods for problems involving multi-fluid dynamics in the presence of multi-fluid interfaces. The technique is an extension of the single-fluid framework already presented by the author. The well-k...

A Priori Error Analysis of Two Force-Based Atomistic/Continuum Hybrid Models of a Periodic Chain

The force-based quasicontinuum (QCF) approximation is a non-conservative atomistic/continuum hybrid model for the simulation of defects in crystals. We present an a priori error analysis of the QCF method, applied to a one-dimensional periodic chain, that is valid for an arbitrary interaction range, large deformations, and takes coarse-graining into account. Our main tool in this analysis is a ...

Blending Methods for Coupling Atomistic and Continuum Models

In this paper we review recent developments in blending methods for atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) coupling in material statics problems. Such methods tie together atomistic and continuum models by using a bridge domain that connects the two models. There are several reasons why AtC coupling methods (of which blending methods are a subset) are important and have been subject to an increased inter...

Continuum descriptions of membranes and their interaction with proteins: Towards chemically accurate models.

Biological membranes deform in response to resident proteins leading to a coupling between membrane shape and protein localization. Additionally, the membrane influences the function of membrane proteins. Here we review contributions to this field from continuum elastic membrane models focusing on the class of models that couple the protein to the membrane. While it has been argued that continu...
